Dr. Katie Klinger's passions include Special Education, digital equity and access, and culture-based education. All three passions have been woven around STEM and environmental sustainability as she worked closely with non-profits and school communities in traditional, charter, and conversion charter schools in Hawaii, the Navajo Nation, and California. As a professor in higher education, she designed grants for math and science project-based programs that fostered investigative, hands-on learning often using Edutopia articles, special reports and video resources to promote evidence-based research. She was honored over the years to sit on the Advisory Committee for the International Society for Technology in Education's (ISTE) Digital Equity Summit. She also created STEMtube to host photos of innovative science fair projects and student-generated "Go Green" videos in Hawaii: website at www.STEMtube.com Dr. Klinger, a recognized leader and mentor in Educational Technology, was the primary designer of the National University Virtual High School, lead faculty statewide for five years for National University's Educational Technology master's degree program, and Director of Grants and Research for the National University System. She was the lead investigator for a four-year, $1.27 million U.S. Department of Education grant through the Preparing Tomorrow's Teachers to Use Technology (PT3) initiative, guiding higher-education faculty and master K-12 teachers in the design of lesson plans that helped more than 14,000 educators enhance their STEM skills. She partnered on grants with Sally Ride Science to empower girls in elementary and middle schools to explore the world of science. She was awarded the 2003 Innovative Teachers Outstanding Achievement Award from AACTE and Microsoft. And she served as a Faculty Associate for the George Lucas Educational Foundation for four years; her blogs may be read online at https://www.edutopia.org/profile/dr-katie-klinger For over a decade, Dr. Klinger has been heavily involved with non-profits in Hawaii to help at-risk youth, special education students, and homeless individuals in high poverty communities as the President of Waianae CARE, Inc.: website at www.waianaecare.org Dr. Katie Klinger currently teaches Exceptionalities (the beginning course) and Capstone Project (the ending thesis and research course) in the Master of Science in Special Education at National University. Her current research project (under development) explores the importance of Culture + AR in Special Education classrooms: Using AR to help students with special needs learn about their culture: website at www.prabble.com.
