Los Angeles, Calif. – Students from Burbank High School dominated the Los Angeles area Young Writers Contest sponsored by National University, winning the fiction category and placing four finalists in the nonfiction and poetry categories.
Schools throughout Los Angeles County were solicited for entries. Approximately 70 submissions were received in March and were judged in April. Winners were announced at a reception on May 14. The contest theme was “What it means to be a Californian: Identity and Culture.” All submissions were required to be original and previously unpublished.
A prize of $150 and publication in National University’s literary magazine, The Gnu, was awarded to fiction winner Charles N. Lontoc of Burbank High School. Arby Tacub, Brandi DeChellis and Nalani Panis of Burbank High School were named finalists in the non-fiction category, and Robby Nadler of Burbank High School was named a finalist in the poetry category.
