National University Awards $175,000 in New Military Spouse Scholarship Program

National University, one of the most trusted and respected top military-friendly universities, advances its educational commitment to the military community

SAN DIEGO, CA (May 12, 2023) — National University (NU), the veteran-founded nonprofit university serving 40,000 students nationwide of which one in four are servicemembers or veterans, announces 35 recipients have been awarded one of the new military spouse scholarships of $5,000 per recipient that can be used toward tuition fees for associate, bachelor’s, and master’s programs at NU.

National University’s innovative approach to education is about supporting the whole student including financial, academic, emotional, career, and family needs. As a top 10% Military Friendly and Yellow Ribbon School, NU is committed to delivering exceptional services and offering financial benefits and resources to assist with educational expenses for our military-affiliated students. “Supporting military families has been a priority from our first days,” said Dr. Mark D. Milliron, president and CEO of National University. “The National University Military Spouse Scholarship program supports military spouses by providing educational and financial resources that open new pathways to possibility.”

This year the new Military Spouse Scholarship program application cycle was launched and close to 200 students applied for the $5000 scholarship. After a competitive application process and with a goal of awarding five scholarships for each branch of service including theArmy, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, Space Force, Coast Guard, and Gold Star Spouses, 35 students received a scholarship this inaugural year, totaling $175,000 awarded by NU during this application cycle. “As an active-duty spouse and mother of three, I can tell you that going back to school is one of the hardest things I have done,” said Tania Bogarts, a master’s in education student and Military Spouse Scholarship recipient. “Having my career line up with my husband’s has always been a challenge and finding a program that supports this lifestyle is the most important thing you can do to prepare for taking the next step. As military spouses, our life’s challenges make us resilient and strong. Find your moment, seize it!”

National University recently became a member of the Department of Defense Military Spouse Employment Partnership (MSEP), which helps military spouses advance their careers and educational opportunities with hundreds of partner employers that commit to recruit, hire, promote, and retain military spouses. As part of this membership, NU will collaborate in job fairs, recruiting events, and provide opportunities via the partner job portal and help to educate workforce leaders and hiring managers to harness the unique skills that military spouses offer organizations each day. Another option for military spouses that NU supports is the My Career Advancement Account Scholarship Program (MyCAA), which is a workforce development program that provides up to $4000 in financial assistance to eligible military spouses for employment or career options.

“As a former Department of Defense employee that led efforts to create the MSEP program, I am committed to advancing this important work at NU,” said Meg O’Grady, National University’s Senior Vice President of Military and Government Affairs. “I’m proud to lead our military, military family, and veteran efforts at a respected institution that fully understands and supports our students.”

“NU is fully committed to supporting the challenging educational needs of military spouses,” said National University’s Military and Veteran Partnerships Manager Danielle Maloy. “I am pleased to announce that NU will offer another scholarship application cycle in Fall 2023.”  Learn more about the next application cycle HERE.
