As a military-friendly, dedicated Hispanic-serving institution that’s been around for more than 50 years, National University is proud to celebrate the many ways the Hispanic community has enriched our culture at large, and our school in particular. This year, we’re spending National Hispanic Heritage Month reflecting on how we support our Hispanic students and celebrate their stories.
“To meet the needs of striving Hispanic students, we need to put in place the scaffolding, support, and services to help more Hispanic students achieve their educational and career aspirations.” — Dr. Mark D. Milliron, president and CEO of National University.
Committed to supporting your educational journey
National University is committed to providing opportunities for our students — for ALL our students. We are proud to be one of the largest private Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI) in the U.S., with two-thirds of our students and graduates being racially diverse. In fact, NU is the largest conferrer of graduate degrees to diverse students in the US — with over 50% women — and the #2 conferrer of doctoral degrees overall. To date, National University has awarded more than $77 million in scholarships.
NU Champions Higher Education for Hispanic Students with ACCESS
For years, National University has consistently ranked among California’s top institutions in higher education for serving minority student populations.
To help remove barriers to Hispanic student success, National University is launching a new initiative called Accelerating Curricular Change and Enhancing Student Support, or ACCESS for short. This initiative is led by a cross-functional team that includes student services, academic affairs, and its office of Social Justice, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Its goal: Over the next five years, the program will launch a three-pronged effort focused on creating inclusive learning environments, ensuring equitable outcomes, and reducing educational costs for Hispanic students.

More programs, more access, more opportunities
National University’s online programs increase opportunities to pursue higher education for all our students. Here are four big benefits:
- Learn new skills from the comfort of your own home. With many 100% online degree and credential programs available, you won’t have to move, or commute to some remote, faraway campus just to learn. All you need is a dedicated Wi-Fi connection and a quiet place to study.
- Earn your degree on your own time. NU’s unique 4- and 8-week class format allows you to listen to lessons and complete your work when it makes sense for you. This way, you don’t have to quit working, or take time off just to get ahead.
- Practical skills for real-world jobs. As an online student, you can learn those essential skills you need to climb the career ladder in your spare time — everything from coding and analytics to graphic design and computer animation.
- More time to do the things you love. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the average daily commute time is 55.2 minutes. If you’re like most people, you’d prefer to avoid traffic or crowded public transportation. Saving those 55 minutes a day (or more) by doing your studies online will free up time you can spend working, connecting with loved ones, exercising, or simply having fun.
- National University awarded $77 million in scholarships in 2022. With the mission to provide students with financial support, NU has launched needs-based scholarships such as the Key Grant and the Opportunity Scholarship, designed to reduce the cost of undergraduate tuition, ease financial stress, and make earning a degree more achievable for students.
National University is here for you
As our students can attest, National University is breaking barriers in education for Hispanics. Along with our 190+ degrees, plus credential and certificate programs, we offer convenient 4- and 8-week courses designed for adult learners who balance work, family, and other life responsibilities. Here, three online learners share how earning a degree at NU transformed their lives.
“My degree means everything to me. It allows me to open more doors in my career and set a good example for my friends and family. It allows me to show everyone it is possible to reach your goals.” — Veronica Garcia, MS Applied Behavioral Analysis, Class of 2023
“Begin right after high school. Life happens, so don’t put off pursuing your dreams. And if you’re a returning student, never feel discouraged – it’s never too late!” ‑ Francisco Hernandez, Masters of Education, Class of 2025
“Being a first-generation college student, the idea of obtaining a bachelor’s degree seemed scary and unrealistic to me for quite some time. After nearly 10 years of on and off enrollment at various colleges, four changes in majors, working full-time, and a global pandemic, I had given up on this far-fetched dream of obtaining a bachelor’s degree. Now, I have earned two associate degrees and am six classes away from earning my bachelor’s degree. I will have proven to myself that I am worthy of capable of being educated and going after my dreams.” — Lisa Alcantara, BA ECE, Early Childhood Education, Class of 2022
“I have worked full-time my entire academic career with NU these past two years. It’s been challenging at some points, but it mostly has been amazing. I truly wouldn’t have been able to acquire such a great quality education if I was forced to attend physically as the time it takes to change out of work and commute would be impossible in my situation.” — George Roura, MS Computer Science, Class of 2024
